In an unprecedented feat of interplanetary communication, NASA’s Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity, has once again established contact with scientists on Earth. The rotorcraft had been silent for over 60 days, leading many to speculate about its status. The triumphant moment when Ingenuity ‘phoned home’ marks a significant milestone in our ongoing exploration of the Red Planet.
Ingenuity Mission and 52nd Flight
Ingenuity‘s role is to fly ahead of the Perseverance Rover and scout any potential obstacles or items of interest. Its last successful flight on April 26th had the rotorcraft in Martian skies for 139 seconds, hopping an impressive 363 meters. This was Ingenuity’s 52nd flight, after which the copter landed over a hill and out of sight from Perseverance.
Mars Helicopter: The Silence and Reconnection
The Martian terrain led to Ingenuity’s prolonged silence after flight 52. However, this silence was unrelated to an earlier incident after flight 49, where the ‘copter was out of touch for over six days due to a rocky outcrop causing communication complications. Upon catching up and cresting the hill on June 28, Perseverance was finally able to re-establish contact with Ingenuity. NASA’s assessment of the copter’s status – based on the little data it has shared – “indicates all is well with the first aircraft on another world.”
What’s next for Ingenuity
A tentative plan for the 53rd journey has been developed, with the team looking to explore a new base of operations near a rocky outcrop that the Perseverance team is interested in investigating.
A New Entrant: Japan’s Robotic Hummingbird
While Ingenuity continues its exploration, Japanese researchers have proposed a novel solution for aerial Martian exploration – a robot modeled after a hummingbird. The flapping robot, as detailed in a June paper published in Nature, performed successful tests at a simulated altitude of 9,000 meters. The authors are hopeful that their work “could be extrapolated to the ultra-thin Martian atmosphere.”
