“The launch comes weeks after India became the first country to land on the moon’s south pole, sparking an outpouring of national pride and highlighting a new space race that features the private sector,” according to Reuters. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) mission is scheduled to depart from Tanegashima Space Centre in southern Japan this coming Thursday.

A “Moon Sniper” Mission: The Technology Behind Precise Landing

Kenji Kushiki, the sub-project manager of the SLIM mission, aptly described the operation as a “breathless, numbing 20 minutes of terror,” emphasizing that landing was akin to a “one-shot game that cannot be undone.” Known as the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM), or more colloquially as the “moon sniper,” this spacecraft aims to make a pinpoint landing near Mare Nectaris. The advanced visual navigation system is designed to land the craft within 100 meters of a predetermined location, signaling a leap in low-cost, high-precision technology.

Japan’s mission isn’t isolated; it is part of a broader picture that includes other nations and private entities. Just last month, India successfully landed its Chandrayaan-3 rover near the moon’s south pole, becoming the fourth nation to accomplish this feat and sparking a new kind of space race featuring the private sector.
