Japan’s Moon Sniper Lands Successfully

In an extraordinary feat of space exploration, Japan’s “Moon Sniper,” officially known as the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM), has achieved a successful ‘pinpoint’ landing on the moon. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) confirmed that SLIM landed approximately 55 meters from its intended target, an unprecedented accomplishment in lunar exploration. Precision Landing of SLIM

The primary mission of SLIM was to demonstrate precision landing capability, aiming to touch down within 100 meters of its target. Surpassing this goal, the probe landed with an accuracy of merely 3 to 4 meters. “We need a more detailed analysis of the data, but the accuracy of the ‘pinpoint’ landing was probably 3 meters to 4 meters,” said Shinichiro Sakai, the project manager, during a news conference. One of the lander’s two main engines likely stopped during the final phase of touchdown, resulting in the craft landing at an angle. Before powering down the probe temporarily, JAXA successfully downloaded crucial technical and image data, providing valuable insights into the mission’s descent and the lunar surface.
