Transforming Transport with AI and Satellite Data
One of the standout projects in this initiative is led by Sports City Management Company. With a focus on improving travel to Manchester’s Etihad Campus, including the Etihad Stadium and the upcoming Co-op Live arena, this project uses satellite data from the European Space Agency’s Copernicus Open Access Hub. By incorporating machine learning, the project will analyze patterns in fan travel to major events, providing transport operators and event planners with critical insights on congestion points, public transport needs, and crowd flow.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is partnering in this initiative, and the project is expected to reduce congestion and enhance sustainability in event logistics, setting a new standard for how major cities manage large-scale events.

Another notable pilot involves Octopus Investments and Treeconomy, who are collaborating to develop advanced tools for monitoring nature restoration projects. By combining Earth observation data with AI and localized drone-based imagery, the project will create a suite of metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of environmental initiatives. This data-driven approach will boost confidence among investors, ensuring that funds are directed toward high-quality, measurable nature and conservation projects.

Unlocking Space for Business also includes new initiatives like GovBridge, which aims to demystify government procurement and help space companies better align their offerings with public sector needs. Another initiative, Unlocking Space for Investment, involves an £8 million investment in the UK Innovation and Science Seed Fund (UKI2S) to support early-stage space startups, bridging the funding gap and driving more private investment into the sector.
