Manoeuvre Trade Space Plots: Enhancing Satellite Safety
SHARE

The UK’s National Space Operations Centre (NSpOC) and UK Space Agency have introduced a groundbreaking feature in the Monitor Space Hazards platform aimed at improving satellite safety maneuvers. This innovative tool, called “Manoeuvre Trade Space Plots,” is designed to help satellite operators visualize and plan collision avoidance maneuvers, ultimately optimizing fuel use and extending the lifespan of satellites.

Understanding Manoeuvre Trade Space Plots

Manoeuvre Trade Space Plots provide crucial visualizations of potential collision risks and help satellite operators make informed decisions. The tool offers detailed visualizations of possible maneuvers from the point of conjunction probability identification to the Time of Closest Approach (TCA), allowing operators to effectively plan collision avoidance strategies.

Richard Moor, Head of Space Surveillance and Tracking at the UK Space Agency, highlighted the importance of this tool:

“Space debris and satellite collisions are increasing concerns for the global space community. Manoeuvre Trade Space Plots will equip operators with the necessary data to navigate these risks efficiently.”

🛰️Last month, the National Space Operations Centre (NSpOC) team, from @spacegovuk and @UKSpaceCmd, warned UK-licensed satellite operators of 1,881 potential collision risks.

Benefits for Satellite Operators

Satellite operators can now access detailed risk profiles for each maneuver, enabling them to optimize fuel usage and ensure long-term satellite operations. This proactive approach supports mission success by preserving critical satellite resources and enhancing overall space safety.

Dr. Lucy Edge, Chief Operating Officer at Satellite Applications Catapult, emphasized the tool’s benefits:

“The ability to visualize and plan maneuvers accurately is a game-changer for satellite operators. It ensures missions are safer and more efficient.”

How It Works

When a potential collision risk is identified with a probability higher than 0.001%, Manoeuvre Trade Space Plots perform further calculations to depict varying probabilities of the event based on different avoidance maneuvers. These visualizations assist operators in choosing the most effective strategy to avoid collisions.

The NSpOC spokesperson noted, “By calculating and visualizing maneuver options, operators can make data-driven decisions to mitigate collision risks and optimize satellite performance.”

Future of Satellite Operations

The introduction of Manoeuvre Trade Space Plots represents a significant advancement in space safety. By continuously updating the tool with new data, NSpOC ensures that operators have the latest information to maintain satellite integrity and mission longevity.

Dr. Alice Bunn, International Director at the UK Space Agency, commented on the tool’s impact: “This development underscores our commitment to enhancing space safety and operational efficiency. It’s a crucial step in addressing the challenges of an increasingly congested orbital environment.”
